Quick Start: OnTap Translation Server

The OnTap Server accepts your source documents in either plain text or HTML format. Your documents are individually converted, and then combined into an OnTap Collection. A single OnTap Collection may contain any number of both types of documents. The OnTap Server translates your documents and sends you an email with the resulting OnTap Collection attached. To view the collection, install the collection (.pdb file) on the PalmPilot using the standard PalmPilot install application for transfer during your PalmPilot's next HotSync.

Plain text is easy to generate and lets you quickly convert the most basic desktop document to OnTap format. HTML may be more time consuming to generate, but HTML permits much greater flexibility over the document's format and allows you to include hypertext links to navigate through your document.

Follow these step by step instructions to create your own OnTap Collections:

via the web:

  1. Save your desktop documents as standard text or HTML files. Follow the guidelines outlined here and in the OnTap HTML Reference.

  2. Use the OnTap Translation Server to submit your file for translation. Select your file, and click the "Submit File" button to translate your file. If you prefer to translate a webpage directly, enter the URL (eg. http://...) and click the "Submit URL" button to translate the webpage.

  3. After a brief pause, the OnTap Server replies with a webpage and link from which you can download your newly created OnTap Collection. The collection is contained in a PalmPilot database or .pdb file. After you download this Collection, use the PalmPilot install application that is part of your PalmPilot desktop software to indicate that the collection (.pdb file) should be moved to your Palm device on the next HotSync.

via e-mail:

  1. Save your desktop documents as standard text or HTML files. Follow the guidelines outlined here and in the OnTap HTML Reference.

  2. Attach and send the documents you want to translate as MIME attachments to the OnTap Server: pilot-server@ontaptech.com. More information concerning email can found in Email Help.

  3. Within a few minutes, the OnTap Server replies with an email to you containing the OnTap Collection as a MIME attachment. The collection is contained in a PalmPilot database or .pdb file. When the new OnTap Collection arrives, use the PalmPilot install application that is part of your PalmPilot desktop software to indicate that the collection (.pdb file) should be moved to your Palm device on the next HotSync.

The OnTap Server combines your documents into a Collection in the same order that you used to attach them to your email. To change this order, you can resend your input and specify the attachments in another order or change the document order once you install the Collection on your PalmPilot.
